Why is it so difficult to find a good Dari translator?

A Dari translator is unique in the sense that he must master the art of speaking modern Dari language as well as understand the source language for the translation pair. A quick Google search will yield thousands of results for Dari translators, but picking the right one is like finding a needle in the haystack. It goes without saying that we respect all our Dari speaking colleagues, however, we have to provide some tips on making sure our readers get the best value for their buck.

Recently we had a client who approached us to clean up their translation. It involved translation of manuals for technical equipment to be used in very controlled environments. Improper use of the equipment could result in injury or death to the operator or people in the vicinity of the equipment. The client’s existing Dari translation was not only performed by a non-Dari native translator, it was also full of linguistic issues such as missing translation, punctuation problems and so on. The client had to re-translate the whole document and wait an extra 2 weeks to get the 200 pages fully translated in Dari by qualified linguists. Read why a native Dari translator should translate your content.

The take away from the above example is this. It is very easy to get a non-qualified linguist to perform your translation for cheaper than market value, but that could leave the end users open to all sorts of risks and the translation buyer will face liability in cases of improper equipment use due to faulty or incomplete translation.

That said, now let’s have a look at what are some of the basic characters of a good Dari translator. Starting with education, you need to make sure that your Dari linguist has at least a post-secondary degree in literature or Dari language translation. Additionally, you must make sure that they have at least three years of on the job experience translating between your content’s source language and Dari. To be fair, there are very few Dari linguists who translate from any language other than English, so you need to do your due diligence thoroughly.

One more thing that people normally don’t consider is the reliability factor. Imagine this scenario. You have to get your equipment to Afghanistan in 3 months and the law requires that your equipment and machinery should be accompanied with properly localized Dari manuals. You have hired a Dari linguist who has met your criteria for education and experience. However, a week after the start of your project, you are unable to reach the Dari translator by email or phone. This actually happens more often than you think. A reliable translator is almost always available and responsive to all your communication.
